Fairness followup
The whole point of my fairness post (below the "it's a baby" post) was to make the point that fairness is just another way of saying the way you think it should be. Fairness is whatever you define it to be. You need to define fairness before you say if something's fair or not.

I stole it from somewhere on the internet that I can't find.

After posting the first fairness post, I thought about how it was relevant to the auto industry problems. If GM declares chapter 11 bankruptcy, it renegotiates all its contracts and debts (as I understand it). That includes its contracts with dealerships, which apparently make it very difficult for GM to close down one of its eight brands. The owners of those dealerships opened and now operate them in ways that use the contract to make them as much money as possible. If the contracts change, the dealerships may not be profitable at all anymore. It's not fair for the dealerships to lose money because GM can't manufacture competitive cars anymore. OTOH, it's not fair for the taxpayers to support GM and not other companies. Or any company, as far as I'm concerned - at least not companies that aren't competitive anymore.

No matter what happens, people lose. There's no solution that's fair to everyone.

Now that I type it, I guess this gets into the idea that once events move forward, there's no fair way for the government to redress past grievances. All you can do is try to fix new problems caused by old mistakes in a way that creates the best result for the most people. But you'll never find a solution that "fair" for everyone involved.
